Columbia Disaster

On my way to Paris I worked on my next newsletter to you. Donna and I gave each other a 5-day Paris vacation for our anniversary, Christmas and birthdays. (all 4 dates are within a 60-day period)

This letter was going to be a 2 or 3 page market update with how various "systems" predict the market. Such as the Superbowl, the January effect, planetary alignment, wave theories and ladies hemlines: some positive notes on the market and a review of how the market performed during the last gulf war with IRAQ.

Then on Saturday evening as we were preparing to go out for dinner, I turned on CNN to catch the news and was greeted with the Columbia tragedy. As I watched the news unfold I couldn't help but draw some parallels and coincidences of past tragedies.

Seventeen years ago the Challenger was to take our first civilian (a schoolteacher) into space. All died during the launch phase.

Columbia took our first foreign astronaut into space: all died upon reentry.

The diversity of the members: 5 men, 2 women. A Jew from Israel, 3 whites a black and a women who was born in India, reminded me of the World Trade Center tragedy. 9-11 was not just a U.S. tragedy, but an international tragedy that crossed all races, religions and nationalities.

Then there was the news that some of the first rumblings were heard over Palestine, Texas. All of this began to give me an erie and chilling feeling.

One of the NASA spokesman asked, "Why does it take such tragedies to bring us together?"

My thoughts wondered the next two nights and I decided to rewrite this letter. And since it has nothing to do with your investments, I'm not quite sure why except that when President Bush ended his remarks with "God Bless America", I thought perhaps we should add "and may God bless and save our world."

Till next time.
